Hi! I have a server where it would be expensive to get a new IPv4 address. The server is a middle/high end machine where I want to host several VPSes for my own development projects.
The idea of mine would be to buy a $6/year lowendbox with public IPv4, and connect to that lowend VPS from my server via openVPN, do some port forwarding magic and voila I now have a public IP for $0.5/mo for my server.
Is this a walkable path? Are there any automation scripts for these or any steps I forgot to consider? Thanks & happy new year!
monkeyServer.sh is a simple shell script made to install a full web stack at low end boxes in about 5 minutes. It is built on top of Monkey Web Server, a really simple but feature rich web server. Monkey is really fast and stable, increadibly small and light on resources.
monkeyServer.sh comes in two flavors:
Running Process and Resource Usage for the Default Flavor:
This version don't include MariaDB or Adminer. Note that if you are using SQLite or any other database method that use files stored at your web root (like JSON files) you should configure the mandril plugin to deny access to the database files. This isn't built by monkeyServer.sh by default because we can't preview the filename patterns used by the users. Please refer to the documentation.
Running Process and Resource Usage for the NoSQL flavor:
monkeyServer.sh will build your stack with a very small set of PHP5 and Monkey Web Server modules. This should be enough to 99% of the use cases. Bellow you will find a full list of the modules.
P.S.: You can, actually, cut the RAM requirement in a half. BUT, for the default flavor, this can be equal to really boring problems with MariaDB if you use InnoDB. So, we will say that minimum memory requirement is to have a realiable server operation. Using less than that should work (with PHP-FPM tweaking you can run the noSQL with 16-24MB and the default with 32-64MB if you tweak MariaDB too) but is not recommended. In the near future, the embedded version should require only 8MB and the tweaks for PHP-FPM and MariaDB should be integrated.
Just run /usr/bin/env bash <((wget -qO - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/alexandreteles/monkeyServer/master/monkeyServer.sh)) as root and follow the script instructions.
If you want to install the noSQL flavor, just run /usr/bin/env bash <((wget -qO - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/alexandreteles/monkeyServer/master/monkeyServer_noSQL.sh)) as root and follow the script instructions.

I was just trying to read up but googleing payload comparison: wordpress multisite vs individual install just gives random guides and not in-Depth information precisely on the PAYLOAD in terms of SQL performance, and overall site responsiveness. I talk this in Multi-Domain mapped context.
I'm offering Wordpress hosting to some of my customers, low (100 Visits/day) to medium (1500 visits/day). I was thinking if I can "group" 4-5 sites and host them on a 1GB KVM, which will be cost effective. Moreover, recent wordpress malicious outbreaks make it mandatory to maintain updates and monitoring, both of which will presumably be easier.
Pls pour in some thoughts..if it would be wise and sane to go this route, considering the hosted domains are completely separate from independent customers.

I have a CGI (Bash) script which forwards the output of an executable to a web client. However, I have some issues with it. I have tried two approaches to run the script:
python -m CGIHTTPServer &
This is a Python embedded web server which runs CGI scripts. It supports only one connection at a time (that's ok for my requirements).
lighttpd + mod_cgi
The problem in both cases is that my script does not get the terminate (or pipe failed) signal when the client disconnects. The end result with Python is that it gets stuck for awhile after the client disconnects (thus unable to process new client requests). The result with Lighttpd is a memory leak: as soon as the client disconnects Lighttpd starts to buffer the CGI output until it runs out of memory.
This is a low end system thus I am trying to avoid extra overhead (i.e. PHP). Any ideas are welcome.

I have a old laptop at my moms house, using for backup for all my personal stuff. I have used around 1.2 TB today. The laptop is old, and today the temperature was over 100c and I just blow it clean for dust. So not long before this dies on me.

I have set a 18 digit alpha numeric password which is auto-generated. I keep it safe on my puter in a text file.
I have set the CpHulk setting to block the IP after 5 failed login attempts.
So chances of any bot or human guessing it and breaking into my root user are very slim. But still I am curious should I worry about these failed login attempts? If they are trying, it means they hope they can break the password. No?
These attempts mostly come from three countries. China on number 1, Ukrain on 2 and Russia on 3.

I was wondering if it would make sense to run a Tor exit node that allows outgoing connections only to very few ports that are almost impossible to get you in trouble.
For example: If I ran an exit node with ExitPolicy accept :53 and ExitPolicy reject *:everything
would a user that happens to use my exit node be able to access only DNS servers and opening websites causes a timeout or
would DNS requests go through my server and HTTP requests through a different exit node at the same time or
would my server simply never be chosen as exit node, because no one only uses DNS?
If the answer is 2. then I would consider allowing any harmless port <1000, say 53 for DNS or 43 for whois.

I would like the community's opinion on this.
In june I ordered a VPS with PeakServers and paid for a year. Earlier this month it was suspended without any reason. I then submitted a ticket, asking why It was suspended and got no answer. Followed up on my ticket, still no answer. Created a new ticket, still no answer. Then they just closed my tickets with no answer.
I'm kinda lost here, I was hoping this could be resolved in a mature way. But I guess thats not the way PeakServers do business. It's not about the money, as it was only $12, it's the whole "lets ignore him, and he might go away" attitude.
What would you guys do ? Just let it go ?

It's a topic that I've seen discussed, but haven't found a resolution for.
When using OpenVPN on an OpenVZ VPS, I can pull 18-19 Mbps. Using PPTP (via PoPToP) on the same VPS, I'm lucky to get 1 Mbps (2 Mbps if I play around with the settings and catch a jet stream).
After researching this, the "obvious" suspect is my MTU settings in the PPTPd config. Indeed, setting the MTU to 1400 wouldn't even let some websites load; apparently it's quite common for speedtest and WHT to go out with an incorrect MTU setting. Playing with the MTU a bit, I was able to get those sites to load, and even head above 1 Mbps, but I'm still a far cry from 18 Mbps. I've tried settings +/- 1400.
Any ideas on further items to try?

monkeyServer.sh is a simple shell script made to install a full web stack at low end boxes in about 5 minutes. It is built on top of Monkey Web Server, a really simple but feature rich web server. Monkey is really fast and stable, increadibly small and light on resources.

Running Process and Resource Usage for the NoSQL flavor:

Hi,
I see a lot of anonymous claiming VPN service - are keeping logs. They all do onething or other. I also feel if you even buy a VPS - you can not avoid it - since logs will be generated on host node for sure.
So does the anonymous VPN service is actually a hoax. Hoping to listen into details of experience and any recommendations if you have any.

The container runs nginx, mysql, php-fpm with no issues. Hostnode is CentOS 6. Both the hostnode and the container have been restarted since recent updates.

I would like to connect to an OpenVPN server with Debian 7 being the client and NOT route all traffic through it automatically. Then I would like to bind individual programs to the VPN network adapter (bind to IP of tun?).
Is that possible? I have been looking, but couldn't find any how-to. I also do not really know anything about iptables/network/etc, so I would really appreciate some help.

I made an horrible mistake, I have accidentally overwritten some php files with rsync and now I just have an old copy of those. Is there a way to recover the original files in any way? I'm on a yearly OpenVZ container and extundelete won't work.
Also do you have any idea if crissic keeps backups of the servers? Those files never changed. I read on lowendbox that they keep weekly backups while on their TOS they say they don't so I'm not sure. I opened a ticket waiting for a reply. I'd like to know if there's still a chance or if I need to start coding again!

I'm not an avid console gamer -- I've always preferred the PC -- but a few days ago I decided to get a PS4. I would like to host two little counter-strike sources servers as I didn't find a server running these two game mods. The servers have 16 slots each, although there won't be more than 8 players normally as the servers are quite new and unknown. I already ran one server on a VPS with 2 Core (800Mhz capped) and 256MB ram. This worked fine. Now I switched over to a VPS with the following specs:
1 core (2100Mhz)
384MB Memory
192MB Swap
Running both gameservers (without players) + debian needs about 175MB ram, which is fine. I don't expect that more players need more than 210MB ram. But I noticed that the VPS is switching the css servers from ram to vswap after some time. I assume that happens because the css servers are empty, anyway I think that the VPS doesn't switch them back to ram if there are players. My question is now, would it make sense to ask my provider to disable my vSwap so it always runs in ram? Futhermore, do you have any suggestions regarding hosting css servers on a VPS?
