Interesting changes at Namecheap for domains being transferred OUT.

So, I have found out the hard way, about some process changes at Namecheap related to transferring domains OUT:

  • When the domain is protected by WhoisGuard, it is now taking 13 hours or more to receive the Authorization Key email (it used to take 0 - 15 minutes to get the Authorization Key email for WhoisGuard protected domains). It appears be more than a "backlog" issue as it has been happening consistently for at least a week.

  • (Confirmed by their support): They no longer allow you to proactively confirm the transfer to the Registry (the final "Domain Transfer Request" email, officially referred to as the "FOA2 email") allowing you to complete all steps of the transfer immediately. The form now fails with an error and you MUST wait 5 - 7 days for the transfer to complete "passively." They claim that even if your domain expires during this period, the DNS will still work (don't know if I trust this any more though).

This all happened over the past few days as I was transferring a few domains out.

In the past you could complete the transfer out process within approx 1 hour; those days appear to be over.

Hope this helps someone. Let me know if your experience is any different.

Cheers and a happy 2015 to everyone.
